There are so many people brewing their own beer nowadays that kegerator accessories are big business. There are companies that offer their own mixtures for sale, all you need to do is add yeast and let it do the job of fermenting. In homes all over the United States, people are starting their own batches of beer. Many are growing their own hops and making their recipes from scratch, without the benefit of a 'starter' package. Hops are the trickiest part of a homemade recipe, they must be harvested at the right time, dried properly, then packaged in measurements based upon a batch of beer - keeping them frozen until time to use. It makes a difference whether making a half-batch of 2.5 gallons or full batch of 5 gallons. Home brewers that make their beer in 5-gallon kegs are serious about their brewing.



I use a premixed brew starter, it makes 2.5 gallons of beer. After a week, the yeast has done its job, then I draw the beer into dark bottles with the amount of sugar necessary to make it turn the beer into an alcohol drink. A good friend of mine has a set-up where he cooks his beer mixture, it drains through some tubes into the keg and he finishes up with a 5-gallon keg. He grows and harvests his own hops, drying them, bagging them and marking the bag with the current date and placing them in his freezer until he is ready to use them in his beer batch.



The natural next step for most hobby brewers is to purchase a kegerator. This is not only a keg, but a refrigerator that holds a keg with a draft tap on it just like a commercial bar. This is the ultimate for most brewing hobbyists. Being able to pull a draft beer that was brewed personally is an ego boost, to say the least.
